Teens create public service announcement (PSA): high blood pressure prevention

Article Abstract:

A five-week activity was instrumental in teaching female African American high school students enrolled at a predominantly low-income public high school in Boston, MA, regarding the significance of developing healthy lifestyles to prevent diseases such as high blood pressure and obesity. The participants were encouraged to modify their habits through a radio public service announcement on high blood pressure prevention campaign by the National High Blood Pressure Education Program. Food models and labels were used to demonstrate the effect of nutrition on their physical well-being.

Scripting public service announcements for radio

Article Abstract:

Public service announcements (PSAs) may be used to provide nutrition information through media to a large audience, free of cost. Cooperation between nutrition professionals and students in a nutrition education class resulted in the drafting of several PSAs that were later aired in a local radio station. The main ingredients of the PSAs were a device to catch the attention of the listener, several sentences on practical nutrition concepts, reference to foods common to various cultures and an invitation for the listener to apply the information.
