The history of nutrition policy

Article Abstract:

Changes in how international nutritional policies have been developed and prioritized are presented. The early framers of the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization focused on the relationships between diet and the increasing incidence of heart disease. Priorities later shifted to the development of nutritional guidelines. A two-pronged effort aimed at addressing food quantity and food quality has recently been combined into a comprehensive approach.

Colonic microflora: nutrition and health; summary and conclusions of an International Life Science Institute (Europe) Workshop held in Barcelona, Spain

Article Abstract:

Colonic microflora act as agents in nutritive, metabolic, immunologic and protective physiological functions. One major metabolic function of colonic microflora is the fermentation of nondigestible dietary substrates as well as endogenous mucus. It also plays important roles in metabolizing primary bile acids and in mutagenesis and carcinogenesis. It is difficult to know about microflora's exact role in the colonic functioning.
