The youngest place on earth: in post-Communist Mongolia, three-quarters of the population is under the age of 35; here, amid strip clubs and open markets, Ayn Rand has risen up to ride with Genghis Khan

Article Abstract:

Mongolia's democracy has been nurtured by a new generation of youthful adults under 35 years old. The country's first elections were held in 1992, and by 1996 the Democratic Coalition gained political control. The Communists helped to create their own opposition by encouraging population growth in the 1970's. The 75% of the population that is under 35 and the 50% under 21 have defined a western-style youth culture and free-market system that rejects Communism, but youthful inexperience is reflected in social and economic problems. Inflation and employment are factors that impact skilled work for the country's educated class. Prostitution, teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are among the trade-offs for uncontrolled social indulgences.
