Washington-based lawyers Sonya Schwartz and Don Fishman discuss their kitchen, which is compact, but well planned to afford space to cook and party. The openness of the kitchen, the wide counter and handy, deep drawers for storage make room for cooking and entertaining.

Helene and Richard Trump designed their Santa Fe, NM, house to accomodate their extensive folk-art collection. The kitchen combines traditional Southwest features with sparse Shaker-like elements. The foyer displays their folk art on open shelves.
