CP sells off forestry business for C$700 million

Article Abstract:

Canadian Pacific Ltd sold its 60.7% share in Canadian Pacific Forest Products Ltd and will discontinue involvement with forest products. Pacific Forest Products Ltd, which was spun off from Canadian Pacific Forest Products earlier in the year, will purchase the Canadian wood products group. Included are pulp and paper mills in British Columbia and Ontario and a hardboard plant in Nova Scotia. Other sales have been announced by Diamond Occidental Forest Inc, Riverwood International Corp, Champion International Corp and several other companies.

Riverside Forest to buy TimberWest sawmill

Article Abstract:

Riverside Forest Products Ltd. acquires a Williams Lake, B.C. sawmill from Slocan Forest Products Ltd. for C$50 million, further strengthening the company's presence in Williams Lake. Slocan had acquired the sawmill as part of its C$200 million takeover of TimberWest Forest Ltd.'s entire B.C. operations, and the mill has the capacity to cut as much as 150 million board feet per year. Riverside also acquires a railroad tie treatment plant, dry kilns, a planer mill, a finger-jointing plant and a stud mill as part of the purchase.

Avenor-Repap deal dies; FCC sells TimberWest

Article Abstract:

News about proposed, completed and ended mergers and acquisitions in the timber industry is described briefly. Avenor Inc shareholders declined the approval of a merger with Repap Enterprises Inc because of the Repap's poor financial position, despite provisions to make the acquisition more attractive to Avenor shareholders. The Columbia Wood Components company was formed by the acquisition of South Bay Industries by Columbia Forest Products.
