Hardwood lumber, veneer firm also designs machines

Article Abstract:

There is a shortage of hardwood lumber in the Midwestern and Eastern states. The unusually rainy spring in 1993 slowed logging in the midwest, causing low inventories. Other problems include the high percentage of logs being exported and the effect of environmental regulations on the industry. The David R. Webb Co in Indiana, which produces veneer logs, designed some innovative equipment to be able to process wood more efficiently. The company has developed a modular veneer dryer that is easy to use and dries better than other dryers. It was built by Durand-Raute Industries. Veneer production processes at David R. Webb are described.

'Value-driven' sawmillers boost yield dramatically

Article Abstract:

Griffin Lumber Co of Cordele, GA, has upgraded by adding scanning systems and machine centers to increase yield without significantly increasing costs. Griffin cuts 35 million bd ft of lumber annually, primarily decking and construction lumber. A new sorter, headrig and bucking system allow Griffin to cut nearly double the amount of lumber per hour, and due to improved lumber recovery, log cost has not increased concurrently.

Article Abstract:

Sierra Pacific Industries has installed a ripsaw optimizing system at its Red Bluff, CA, remanufacturing plant. The Ripscan system uses color cameras to scan boards, and the information gathered is used to determine the most efficient ripping pattern for each board. The system, which was created by Lucidyne Technologies, is able to scan boards passing at speeds of up to 400 fpm.
