For a look at high tech, head for Quebec sawmills

Article Abstract:

Quebec's sawmills have enjoyed a growth spurt in recent years, thanks to policy changes and innovations which have allowed them to increase their lumber exports to the US. Lumber mills are now allotted land that once was the exclusive preserve of paper mills. New advances in sawmill technology allows mills to make lumber from small logs of only 4-6 inches in diameter. New processes also create lumber from curved logs by using computer scanners to determine the shape of the log and optimize its saws for proper cutting.
