Indiana mill specializes in made-to-order components

Article Abstract:

Jasper Woodworking Co, a hardwood dimension mill in Jasper, IN, provides custom hardwood components for the furniture industry. Jasper employs 75 people. They use lower-grade lumber to produce the components for home furnishings that do not show or are covered by upholstery. Three-quarters of the 100,000 board ft per week raw material the mill uses per week is popular and soft maple. The company acquires green lumber from local private timber lands and the nearby Hoosier National Forest.

Euro-style BC mill needs exact log merchandising

Article Abstract:

The Western Whitewood mill of International Forest Products Ltd in New Westminster, BC, Canada, started operation in 1987 using the German Linck line. Exact log merchandising is required to make its one-pass sawing style operate efficiently. Large amounts of accurate data are needed if the computer model is to work properly, but the original model was to complex and ambitious according to division analyst Barry Comis.

French mill specializes in value-added products

Article Abstract:

Scierie Piveteau makes preserved wood and solid-wood panel products that are pressure treated. The company uses pine logs to make its products and processes the logs within two weeks of being cut to achieve the high quality for which it is known. The sawmill facility in Ste. Florence, France, has two lines, one each for different sizes of logs, and the logs arrive at the facility already sorted by size to reduce time.
