Other 'New South' rises on global scene

Article Abstract:

Argentina, Chile and Brazil have great potential as future lumber providers. Chile has over 3.7 million acres of trees on plantations to be processed at local sawmills or foreign plants. Argentina has 2.2 million acres of tree plantations and could be available for more because of its flat landscape and good political and economic climate. Keith Danley spoke of these nations at a Forest Products Society meeting and also compared the environmental impact of using North American hardwoods and South American tropical trees.

Prospering won't be easy, but industry can compete

Chile's native forests can be utilized, leaders assert

Article Abstract:

The 1997 Expocorma forest products industry trade show provided an opportunity for Corma president Fernando Leniz to push Chile's political leaders, including President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, for forestry policies. Corma is the country's forest industry trade association. New statistics, Leniz noted, refute the idea that Chile's native forests are disappearing.
