Homebuilding slows after February surge

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Dept. of Commerce reports that U.S. Mar 1997 housing starts dropped to 1.43 million, a decline of 6.4% from the Feb 1997 figure of 1.52 million. Analysts attribute a portion of the decline to the natural disasters which beset the U.S. midwest during the period, resulting in a 20% drop in housing starts for the region. However, analysts also suggest that increases in mortgage interest rates will continue to keep the rate of housing starts to only modest gains in future months.
