Panel capacity race starts to slow down

Article Abstract:

A survey of the wood products industry worldwide reveals a decline in the number of plant construction projects planned for 1996 and 1997. A downturn in panel production at many North American plants was observed in 1995, which showed an operating rate of 85%, versus a rate of 99% in 1994. The medium-density fiberboard (MDF) sector is slated for the greatest number of projects planned for 1996 and 1997. The structural panels, particleboard, and hardboard sectors are also evaluated. A listing of panel projects by country and company is presented.

BC fears C$1-billion hit to 1998 revenues

Article Abstract:

British Columbia's forest products sector is experiencing a decrease of 1 billion Canadian dollars in product sales volume due to loss of North American and Asian markets for economic reasons. BC's government is planning to diminish stumpage taxes by $5 Canadian dollars/cubic meter and wood harvesting fees to support the forestry firms. Decreasing product sales are expected to affect forestry companies' revenues in 1998.
