Paralysis overtakes forest issue

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration is not meeting the needs of the forest products industry. Early expectations that human and economic needs would not be sacrificed have been disappointed. Instead, the president has chosen to manage West Coast forests by fixing annual timber sale volume at only 1.2 billion bd ft. This compares with 1980s' annual sales of up to 5.2 billion bd ft. The industry is, therefore, turning to litigation, and three suits were filed against the Clinton government in the summer of 1993. Private property rights are likely to be an important issue in the 1990s.

Resin advances support strawboard development

Article Abstract:

Use of various forms of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) allows wood product manufacturers to produce strawboard particleboard panels for various applications. Wheat straw and other agricultural fibers are processed into medium-density fiberboard and particleboard. MDI used in strawboard production cures fast, creates strong bonds between wood particles and does not emit formaldehyde.
