Brazil conference forecasts rapid development of forest products manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Speakers at the Nov 1996 World Forest Institute conference in Portland, OR, on the Brazilian forest industry touted the advantages of the industry. The rapid pace of forest growth, low raw material prices, strong access to European and US markets, as well as greater economic stability due to lower inflation rates and the government's policy towards deregulation and privatization make the market especially attractive. Disadvantages include a preponderance of poorly capitalized saw mills equipped with outdated technology.
