'Urban forest' mill converted from particleboard to MDF

Article Abstract:

Willamette Industries Inc. converted its Eugene, OR particleboard plant into a medium-density fiberboard (MDF) plant. Before the conversion, over half of the plant's raw materials came from the source called the urban forest, recycled wood from lumber waste, construction sites, and other clean wood diverted from landfills. The mill began MDF production in Feb. 1996 with chips, but will reintroduce an increasing percentage of recycled wood. All 100 workers remained on payroll during the seven-month shutdown, kept busy with training, visits to other Willamette MDF plants, and watches at the plant.

'Insane' company purchase yields quick turnaround; new particleboard plant was performing far below its potential. Teamwork plus mechanical upgrades brought production up to speed

Article Abstract:

Suda Bhagwat bought Allegheny Particleboard of Mt Jewett, PA, in 1991 after it had only reached 25% of capacity for it previous owners. In 1992, the firm has achieved 85% of capacity, panel downgrade is less than 5% rather than more than 30%, the labor force is 20% smaller than before the takeover and operating costs are 33% lower. A team-oriented workforce and a good relationship with suppliers and customers have made this the sixth successful business turnaround for Bhagwat.
