A woman recounts that during the Great Depression her grandfather was always on the road looking for jobs where he could find them. He would send money whenever he had work but that did not happen regularly. Her grandmother was a very good cook and sent out her children to sell the baked goods she made.

1930s: a recess treat

Article Abstract:

A man recounts that during the Great Depression her mother sent him to school with potato candy. It is made by mixing mashed potato with confectioner's sugar and turning it into a soft dough. The latter is then spread on a sugar-covered board where peanut butter is applied and rolled like jelly roll.
