Storms and surges

Article Abstract:

Mid-latitude depressions are a major method of heat transport in the atmosphere, and are often responsible for destructive storms in the United Kingdom. Their generation and effects are explained here. Minor disturbances to the circulation at the polar front, at the boundary between warm and cold air masses of different densities, can cause instabilities which result in depressions. The different stages of a depression are described. The North Sea experiences storm surges in the winter, which are caused by an interaction of depression and tidal conditions.
