UK merchant bank Henry Ansbacher believes it has an important role to play in South Africa where since 1992 it has been part of banking group First National. Henry Ansbacher recognises that its role there will be based more on helping South African firms refocus and move onto the international stage. There is less opportunity in the area of corporate foreign investment in South Africa and M&A work. This is partly because UK firms are focusing on European and Asian markets, and partly because foreign investors in South Africa tend to go for joint ventures or similar alliances.
