A man recalls how her mother always began measuring windows as soon as they arrived at a new house. Since they moved frequently, her mother had a collection of curtains to fit every type of window. His mother's preoccupation with curtains was her way of making their new homes as cozy as possible.

Her only son's death due to a skiing accident made a mother realize that joys and pains are part of life and living. She also had to deal with the chemical dependency of her only daughter, who was skiing with him on that fateful day and who turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with her guilt.
