Serious training in competitive shooting often begins at the age of 12. Many gun clubs have junior programs that provide equipment and facilities. Competing locally can lead to national matches. Members of the US Shooting Team are selected at the US International Shooting Championships.

The challenge of shooting at the Olympics

Article Abstract:

One of the events at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA, is the Men's Double Trap, in which shooters must hit 150 clay targets thrown two at a time in different directions. Olympic hopefuls must learn to shoot safely, enter tournaments, and participate in try-outs.

The US Shooting Team won 19 medals in the 1991 World Cup matches and is expected to be tough competition in the 1992 Olympics. Olympic shooting events include air rifle, air pistol and running target.
