Rappers from the Rez? Native American music, both traditional and contemporary, is in the air

Recent years have seen the rising popularity of Native American music even among whites. Various groups, such as The Boyz from the Rez who sing both traditional and contemporary tunes, are now enjoying wide acclaim. This trend is partly attributed to the positive portrayal of Native Americans in films.

A new generation of women musicians is combining feminist sentiments with melodic, popular music. The music of k.d. lang, Michelle Shocked, and Tracy Chapman is discussed, and various recent articles about women's music are compared.

Synagogue folk: guitars, not organs, shape a Jewish music renaissance

Issues concerning the revival of Jewish liturgical folk music are discussed. The music now used in synagogues and minyanim reflects the influences that have moulded modern US culture as a whole.
