Sociology appears to be a vanishing discipline, with sociology degrees conferred by US universities dramatically decreasing. Some critics blame too much specialist jargon for its decline, while others contend that it has too many specialized sub-areas. A more serious problem, however, is the lack of concurrence on its objectives or methods.
