War illness under the microscope: VA, DoD partner to study adverse health effects of deployment

Article Abstract:

VA and DoD are taking preventive steps to protect the health of troops before and during deployment, and to make it easier to identify the source of post-deployment health problems. They both are partnering together in Millennium Cohort Study that would help answer researchers about the health effects of military services and would guide them on health care and benefits.

Vision health: An eye to the future

Article Abstract:

The Veteran's Affairs extensive vision-care effort includes many high-tech advances and also offers support and rehabilitation for veterans with partial or total vision loss. Health-care providers recommend eye examination every two years for older adults but those at higher risk for certain condition have annual exams.

Chickenpox redux

Article Abstract:

VA is currently conducting research into shingles, jointly with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The disease has such an impact on the elderly, that some 37,000 volunteers have been recruited for a study into possible treatments.
