Trivial pursuits

Article Abstract:

Californian politicians bemoan the declining quality of political coverage in the media. The Californian political scene is large and complex, and political news coverage has to compete with coverage of other events. These factors mean that newspapers and television news programmes tend to concentrate on the scandals and the more exciting political events rather than everyday political activity and the deeper issues. This creates a lack of respect for politicians and a gap in the public's political knowledge which is harmful to democracy.
