Managed health care: the fix is not in

Article Abstract:

Democratic political strategists in California are becoming increasingly worried about the apparent reluctance of Governor Gray Davis and the legislative leadership to identify priorities for managed health care reform. There is particular concern about suing health plans, with the industry being very keen to block legislation in this area. Democratic political consultant Gale Kaufman feels that legislative leaders are failing to take up a defining political issue and could face significant problems in 2000 if only a small number of disconnected reform bills are presented.

Tobacco politics

Article Abstract:

Tobacco manufacturing is closely interlinked with politics. Despite the existing high cigarette taxes and strict anti-smoking ordinances, the industry has managed to dominate California's economy. Some politicians accept money from these tobacco companies in exchange for their strong opposition towards the implementation of anti-smoking campaigns. However, media's focus on the negative aspect of the industry as well as the current issues being discussed at the national level are the major factors that would determine the success of a political aspirant.

Tepid Pete

Article Abstract:

California Gov Pete Wilson's 1996 State of the State address revealed the confused nature of his political agenda. In the speech, he appeared to give too much emphasis on the issue of teen pregnancy to the extent of bypassing other pressing political issues. Speaking to Sacramento press club members several days later, he reiterated his support for the use of public funds for abortion operations. Most observers argue that the governor's support for abortion contradicts his concern for the problem of teenage pregnancy.
