A mixed-up blessing for environmentalists

Article Abstract:

Gray Davis, Governor of California, has been sending mixed signals to environmentalists. He emphasized that Resources Agency chief Mary Nichols had gone beyond her authority by withdrawing from court records a state legal brief backing farm interests in an ongoing legal case over water in Central Valley, CA, but his overall aims with regard to environmental protection remain unclear. Not all his appointments to environmentally sensitive positions have been welcomed, and he does not seem to have responded to polls indicating that voters are willing to accept wide-reaching measures to protect the environment.

The guns in our midst: facts and figures from the U.S. and California

Article Abstract:

There are around 210 million guns in private hands in the US, of which California accounts for an estimated 26 million. The number of legal gun sales recorded in California in 1999 was 513,419, the highest since 1993. A gun in the home increases the risk of death to occupants by between two and three times, while the risk of suicide rises by five times. There are still 4,500 licensed gun dealers in California, and a gun was used 69% of the time in homicides in California in 1998.
