A trivial affair

Article Abstract:

The Orange County, Ca. election to replace Assembly Speaker Doris Allen illustrates the problems caused by the common practice of placing spoiler candidates to tilt election results. The Republicans enlisted a bogus Democrat to split the Democratic votes and ensure a GOP victory, an incident that has damaged people's faith in the election system. Assembly Speaker Curt Pringle, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher and other Republicans appear to have been involved. Senior politicians and the media who trivialize the matter ignoring its far-reaching effects.

Back to basics

Article Abstract:

There is much disagreement in the education community as to the purpose of education and the role of schools. It is argued that while schools prepare children for jobs and citizenship, they also need to inculcate a basic understanding of the common values of all Americans regardless of their ethnic background or heritage. The schools are thus facing an enormous task of blending diversity into a single multinational culture. This task is complicated due to the lack of teachers from diverse ethnic backgrounds and the idea of teaching common values.

Knight distributes a racist poem

Article Abstract:

Assemblyman Pete Knight of Palmdale distributed a racist poem about illegal Latino immigrants to Assembly Republicans. The poem is an offensive piece referring to Latino immigrants as breeders who live off welfare and think Anglos are dummies. Pete Knight justified his actions by saying it was an amusing poem dealing with a person's point of view. He had to apologize later to Democrat Richard Polanco and Latino lawmakers and express his regret to the entire house.
