Abortion in the shadows

Article Abstract:

The number of abortions performed in the US has dropped as the use of contraceptives became more popular. Despite this, the US remains to be the country with the highest abortion and unwanted pregnancies. Thus, the shortage of doctors who are capable of performing abortion is becoming a growing concern. Pro-choice advocates are further alarmed by the new batch of medical doctors who are found to be ill-equipped and lack training in doing this type of surgery.

Delaine Eastin

Article Abstract:

Delaine Eastin, California's elected state superintendent of public instruction, has limited control over local schools and has almost the same powers as the members of the California State Board. Her edgy relationship with members of the board has become colder as her disagreements with them over policies occur more often as in the issue of math standards. One of her proposals to the board is the expansion of arts curriculum in schools.

A sense of place, a clash of memory

Article Abstract:

Children in the 1950s used to play safely and innocently at Bidwell Park in Chico, CA, but the area has since proliferated with urban crimes, such as brutal murders, robberies and assaults. Some parents feel their children should only visit the park if they are accompanied by adults. The area has also changed dramatically through housing developments at the southern edge of town, with the available area of open space rapidly declining.
