Barbara Boxer: will women catapult her into the U.S. Senate?

Article Abstract:

US Rep Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has been actively seeking Democratic Party support in her bid for the US Senate. She was responsible for such landmark legislation as that covering the public bidding of military equipment parts contracts. Boxer has also advocated the use of federal funds in abortions for victims of rape and incest. Her campaign platform for the Senate promises to propel legislation on women-centered issues. Although her bid likely will attract support from Democratic women, there has been an expressed fear that Boxer may alienate traditional male Democrats from her campaign.

Religious right losing its grip

Article Abstract:

The machinery of the California Republican Party was once controlled by the religious right. However, it is now gradually being taken over by Republicans who present themselves as mainstream. This process appears to involve Republicans of many different ideologies, including some who are strongly opposed to abortion but want this issue removed from the party platform. There are now around six GOP voluntary organizations involved in the effort to regain control of the California Republican Party.

Gray Davis wets a finger

Article Abstract:

The administration of the governor of California, Gray Davis, has conducted an opinion poll. Davis' office wanted to test the political mood of voters, find about the governor's image and perceived performance and look to the future on policies. The results of the poll were presented at a seminar, after which follow-up questions showed concern that Davis does not take enough notice of public opinion when formulating policies.
