Biometrics, software propel time & attendance

Article Abstract:

Biometric technologies are increasingly being integrated into time and attendance systems. The trend is aided by the development of less costly equipment that has made the technology competitive with magnetic stripe and bar code readers. Some of the equipment available in the market include the Identix Fingerscan V20 from Identix of Sunnyvale, CA, the Veriprint 2100 from Biometric Identification of Sherman Oaks, CA, and the Handpunch series from Recognition Systems of Campbell, CA.

Barriers: not just for government anymore

Article Abstract:

Increasing incidences of theft and unwanted intrusions are driving the development of barriers. Formerly used only by embassies, military bases and nuclear facilities, barriers are now being used by cargo depots, universities and business establishments. The wider market has also led to the development of portable barriers that are meant for temporary use. These include the IP500 from Delta Scientific of Valencia, CA, a beam-type barrier capable of stopping a 15,000-pound vehicle moving at 30 miles per hour.

Fired up for safety

Article Abstract:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) has instituted a fire prevention strategy by teaming up with the Chapel Hill Fire Dept. The school, the site of a 1996 fire that resulted in the death of five students, has also required all of on-campus residence halls to comply with a Town Council ordinance that requires a sprinkler system for all such institutions. UNC-CH rules also calls for an unannounced fire drill participated in by all of the schools fraternity and sorority organizations.
