Comment on 'Assessing MEP influence on British EC policy' by Stafford T. Thomas

Article Abstract:

Stafford T. Thomas' report on UK members of European Parliament's (MEP) influence on British EC policy erroneously asserts that UK MEPs have little effect on the UK's EC policy and that the influence of MEPs will continue to be weak. Members of the UK Labor Party in the European Parliament have had a great deal of influence on the Labor Party's EC policy through the process of Policy Review. The European Parliamentary Labor Party will have more influence as a result of obtaining the same rights as the Parliamentary Labor Party.

Comment on 'Assessing MEP Influence on British EC Policy' by Stafford T. Thomas

Article Abstract:

Stafford T. Thomas' report on UK members of European Parliament's (MEP) influence on British EC policy deals more with the influence of UK MEPs within their own party than with their influence on the UK's EC policy. Thomas makes some valid comments, but he exaggerates the difference between MEPs in the Conservative Party and members of Parliament. Thomas should compare the European Parliament to the US Congress or some other organization, rather than using a national parliament as the standard of comparison.

Assessing MEP influence on British EC policy

Article Abstract:

The UK members of the European Parliament (MEP) have little effect on British EC policy. This is the result of the relative lack of power of the European Parliament and the relative invisibility of MEPs in the UK. The key factor in MEPs' lack of influence in British EC policymaking is MEPs' motivation by an orientation toward the politics of the European Parliament instead of the politics of Westminster. MEPs will continue to have little influence on British EC policy.
