Congress, Clinton and California

Article Abstract:

The 43 Republican Senators vowed to use the filibuster to stop the budget deficit reduction package proposed by Pres Bill Clinton because of its Democratic Party 'business-as-usual' technique of taxing and spending. Moderate Senate Republicans were angry because Clinton did not try to elicit their votes or devise any compromises due to his belief in the power of the Senate Democrats to pass the reduction proposal or stop the filibuster. California will receive $519 million to pay for immigrants and refugees and Commerce Secretary Ron Brown will aid in the California economic recovery.

Pete Wilson and welfare

Article Abstract:

California Governor Pete Wilson's proposal to cut welfare funding involves reducing benefits for out-of-school teenage mothers and those with too many welfare dependent children. He also advocates non-payment of welfare to California migrants in their first year in the state. Pres George Bush has voiced his support for the reforms that Wilson seeks to enforce, stating that 'welfare was never meant to be a lifestyle.' However, New York Governor Mario Cuomo criticized Wilson, saying that the increase in welfare dependency by Californians was the result of inefficient state management.
