Feinstein towers over would-be GOP challengers

Article Abstract:

The Republicans will nominate either County Supervisor Bill Horn or State Senator Ray Haynes to run against Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in the US Senate for Campaign 2K. Although it is thought neither candidate will win against Feinstein if they do well it may help their prospects for the future. Feinstein has been campaigning for 10 years. The best Republican candidates, Insurance Commissioner Charles Quakenbush and Secretary of State Bill Jones, have decided to delay their plans to run for the senate until 2002. Whilst Glendale Representative James Rogan has family health problems.

The new legislature: resisting temptation

Article Abstract:

A number of major changes are occurring in Californian politics. For one, Gov Joseph Graham Davis is the first Democrat to assume office after 16 years. Democratic legislative majorities also dominate the Assembly with five additional seats to buttress the party's leadership. However, Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa is not assured that he could pass legislation wantonly given the margin tilted in his favor. Republican leader Rod Pacheco, his counterpart in the lower house, has a daunting task with the decreased number of Republicans in both the legislative caucuses.

Reuse, recycle: so you see, you can go home again

Article Abstract:

There are possible Capitol players in all of the mayoral contests taking place in the leading Californian cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, Fresno and San Francisco. In Los Angeles, Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa has been preparing the ground for a mayoral campaign in 2001, while in San Diego state Senator Steve Peace, a moderate Democrat, may enter the mayoral contest. In San Francisco, Mayor Willie Brown, former Assembly Speaker, is seeking re-election in 1999, while in Fresno state Senator Jim Costa is being seen as a possible mayoral candidate.
