Immoderate moderates

Article Abstract:

California Republican Party activists who portray themselves as moderates are investing a great deal of money and energy in campaigns to remove incumbent conservatives. Moderates are particularly active in Orange County, CA, where they have created a war chest with the aim of taking over the county central committee and removing Tom Fuentes, its conservative Chmn. The moderates emphasize party building, but they are actually strongly motivated by their pro-abortion rights opinions. They wish to see any reference to abortion removed from party manifestos. It can be argued that they want a return to Gerald Ford, the moderate who almost destroyed the Republican Party.

Gray Davis: walking in Jimmy Carter's footsteps

Article Abstract:

The performance of California Governor Gray Davis can be likened to that of former President Jimmy Carter, who was also a 'centrist' Democrat. Like Carter, Davis has been criticized for his micromanaging style of governance. This approach makes it extremely difficult to make decisions efficiently. Carter's downfall was the result of paralysis when faced with complex policy challenges, and this could also happen to Davis. However, it must not be assumed that it will necessarily easy to remove Davis from office.

Newly-appointed Democratic governor Gray Davis has supported Labour union policy since his appointment began.
