Insurance: the second Oakland firestorm

Article Abstract:

Oakland Hills residents suffered a second blow when insurance companies failed to adequately settle their claims after a destructive fire burned down their homes. The vague provisions of insurance policies complicates matters more, causing the passage of Senator Nick Petris' bill which provides for the simplication of homeowner insurance policy language to ensure protection of both the insurer and the insured. A two-day hearing on the case featured conflicting testimonies of both parties while industry people suggested ways which allows insurance companies to serve their clients better and improve their policies.

School vouchers: will they save or destroy public education?

Article Abstract:

The Voucher/Choice initiative seeks to upgrade quality of education by giving parents the right to choose any school they feelis best for their child. If this petition is validated by voters in November, the State will be issuing vouchers to each child to cover cost of schooling starting 1994-95. Voucher value will be equivalent to 50% of average daily attendance. The initiative has been previously suggested by Adam Smith, Thomas Paine, John Stuart Mill and Milton Friedman. The initiative has been met with controversy but the Archdiocese has not taken a stand on the issue.
