Lack of school safety related to growth of gang activity on campus

Article Abstract:

Violent crime has become commonplace in California public schools, and most of it is related to gangs. Gang activity has spread from cities to rural and suburban areas as well. Prevention programs at the local level are the major factor in stopping gang-related crime. Communication between campuses is also essential. The California Legislature is considering three bills to increase school safety. AB 777 and AB 1454 would set up metal detectors in Los Angeles schools. AB 1612 would require schools to develop school safety plans.

Managed care struggles to come to age

Article Abstract:

Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) in California have become controversial for their shift in focus to profit making. A Californian law created HMOs in 1982 in the face of a mounting medical costs to provide health care to poorer citizens. Department of Corporations action in 1994 under director Gary Mendoza is also responsible for the conversion of a number of HMOs to profit organizations. Californians' reluctance in accepting that the medical profession is a business also plays its part.

Is a political deal binding?

Article Abstract:

Low level radioactive waste is accumulating in biotechnology labs, hospitals, nuclear energy and research facilities in the Southern California desert of Ward Valley. The planning of ways to dispose the nuclear waste would affect the senate's selection of Pete Wilson's appointees for the Health and Welfare Agency in 1992. The appointees will be confirmed only after the details on the plans to solve the Ward Valley issue are given.
