Looking ahead to a 21st century crisis

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton's slashing of the budget has clearly affected plans for the fusion-energy experiment. As a result of the budget cut, American scientists have pulled out from different sites around the globe including the La Jolla design headquarters for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The move spells disaster for the attempt to substitute fossil fuels with new energy supplies such as fusion reactions, the process that powers stars by combining atoms under extreme pressure and temperatures.

Transportation secretary Norman Mineta

Article Abstract:

A biography is presented of the US Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, the former major of San Jose, California, and currently the only democrat in an otherwise all-Republican White House. Mineta gained the experience necessary for the position when, as President Clinton's Secretary of Commerce, he had to deal with issues such as airlines, highways, railroads and bridges.

The price of clean

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the high cost and long-term nature of any clean-up operations at former military bases. The $491-million budget provided by President George W. Bush's administration for this purpose is discussed.
