Of bears and BMWs: upscaling Yosemite (Yosemite National Park)

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists and tourists alike are protesting the National Park Service's proposal to upgrade the amenities available in the Yosemite National Park. The proposal aims to replace tent cabins and all existing facilities without baths with a 340-room modern motel and fastfoods. The proposal also intends to convert the skating rink into a meadow and eliminate pony rides. The plan will make visiting the park more comfortable but will worsen environmental degradation in the Yosemite which is considered the blueprint of all other national parks in the U.S.

Yosemite: new management for an old favorite

Article Abstract:

Yosemite Park will have a new management under the leadership of Barbara J. Griffin, the first woman superintendent of the park. Griffin has already worked at the park as an assistant superintendent and experts feel that her experience will help solve the park's problems. Griffin plans to evolve a strategy to solve the problem of overcrowding, while maintaining the park's flow of visitors. The park's new concessioner, Yosemite Concession Services, is also making significant contributions to the maintenance of the park.

Yosemite in transition

Article Abstract:

The metamorphosis of the Yosemite National Park in California is expected to influence the national park conservation and restoration efforts in other states. The National Park Service and the park's advocates have drafted the Yosemite Valley Implementation Plan (VIP). Under the VIP, problems such as overcrowding and congestion in the Yosemite park will be eliminated through the removal and modification of some roads and other transportation structures.
