Oligopoly structure and the incidence of cigarette excise taxes

Article Abstract:

The development of an oligopolistic market and the establishment of excise taxes in the US cigarette market during 1955-1990 are examined. An estimated cost function based on the given model showed that product manufacturing exhibited a functional relationship with increasing returns to scale. Model simulation of a federal excise tax increase showed a greater effect on price and consumption levels than a similar increase for state and local tax rates.
