Openness: standards, off-shelf components essential

Article Abstract:

The adoption of open architecture security systems is the main topic of the Alliance 2000 conference in Amelia Island, FL. The meeting brought together corporate security buyers, security system manufacturers and system integrators to discuss the merits of adopting open systems for the security industry. Among the benefits cited is the better fit of open systems to the corporate environment as well as the reduction in prices that an open architecture would bring.

New smart cards, but still old door controls

Article Abstract:

Smart card utilization in the US is being pioneered by corporations with campus environments as well as those with a penchant for applying technology to business uses. Smart cards are being used by such institutions as Pfizer and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania for identification, financial and security purposes. However, the cost of installing smart card readers at building entrances continue to be seen as prohibitive, with most firms relying on magnetic stripe or proximity readers.

Web browsers as GUIs

Article Abstract:

Web browsers are increasingly being used as graphical user interfaces (GUI) due to a number of attractive features they possess. Browsers, through the use of cursors, pull-down menus, toolbars and icons can move easily between various sites and pages of audio and visual data. These advantages have forced Microsoft to shift its overall operating system GUI systems to browser-like displays.
