Preserving the Valley's farmland

Article Abstract:

Some preservationists claim agriculture in Central Valley, CA, will ultimately be replaced by housing, roads and commercial buildings, with the American Farmland Trust claiming that two acres of agricultural land are developed every minute in the US. Around 10% of the valley's agricultural area has already been developed, claim observers, with a further 20% due to be eradicated in forthcoming years as the failing farmers sell to land speculators. Just 382 of the 74,126 farms in California were owned by a farmer aged under 25 in 1997.
