Relative standing comparisons, risk taking, and safety regulations

Article Abstract:

Factors that influence individual risk-taking decisions within a societal context are considered. Status-seeking as a function of risk-taking is examined in light of some employees' willingness to take certain risks in the work environment as a means of gaining greater status. A key issue is whether status seeking leads to more risk taking and whether that risk taking is excessive in terms of its possible negative impact on the rest of the societal work unit. In the case of non-systematic risk, status seeking leads to more (less) risk taking only when the utility of status is less (more) concave.

Strategic transfers and private provision of public goods

Article Abstract:

Public good contributors facing similar price structures have no incentive in strategic monetary transfers with each other because of equilibrium conditions. However, changes in the level of contribution productivity give the less productive agent greater incentive for substantial unconditional transfers to the more productive agent. A subgame perfect equilibrium case is then reached that offers full specialization.
