Republican House majority elevates role for California comer

Article Abstract:

Republican Congressman and a key member of the Californian delegation, David Dreier, enjoys enhanced political status in the Republican majority Congress. Dreier, who is the vice chairman of the rules committee in the House, became a Congressman at the age of 27. He plans to make efforts to abolish the 'closed rules,' against which he had campaigned in the previous Democratic majority Congress. Dreier's new reform package, in accordance with Republican perspectives, has eliminated three full committees and 30 subcommittees.

California's newest "New Democrat"

Article Abstract:

Freshman Representative Ellen Tauscher considers herself as more of a conservative fiscally than a typical Bay Area Democrat. Tauscher, who has a deep background in business and finance, is the first woman to win a seat in the New York Stock Exchange. She entered politics and defeated Rep Bill Baker, who has been a political institution in the East Bay area. She is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and supports environmental protection, the assault weapons ban and the Brady gun law.

Downsizing California's military-industrial complex

Article Abstract:

When the military base closing commission started operations, California had three times the military facilities of any other state. As a result of the efforts of military base closing panels, 330 installations all over USA including 40 in California have closed down. The gloomy side of the picture is that the military-industrial complex of California will be much smaller than it used to be, although still quite large.
