Saving the Sierra: master plan for the Range of Light

Article Abstract:

The Sierra Summit was held in Nov 1991 to bring to the attention of government and environmental protection authorities the polluted and ravaged state of some parts of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Summit revealed that air in Sequoia National Park is more polluted than in Los Angeles, CA and that some Sierra Nevada streams are already ruined by rampant logging, uncontrolled sheep and cattle grazing and toxic chemical contamination. The viability of establishing a national park that covers the whole Sierra range and managed by a regional council was also raised during the summit.
