A spatial model of tax competition with multiple tax instruments

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding what various models of tax competition show about making tax policy are discussed. This model has two local jurisdictions in each metropolitan area, located along a line segment, and many metropolitan areas in the world economy. The residents of each local jurisdiction are allowed to commute to work in another jurisdiction. Lump-sum taxes, source-based wage and business capital taxes are considered.

Spatial growth and redevelopment with perfect foresight and durable housing

Article Abstract:

A model for planning housing development and redevelopment is presented, assuming that the developer has perfect insight into the future and has used housing that will last and can be redeveloped many times. This model is then compared to the real world.

Uniform spatial growth with perfect foresight and durable housing

Article Abstract:

Explicit solutions for expanding monocentric cities are presented. The solutions assume that housing is durable, that redevelopment cannot take place, and that landlords have perfect foresight. It is further assumed that per capita income, transportation costs per mile, and the city's population change at constant percentage rates. An infinite time horizon is used to solve the model analytically. Development density increases with distance from city center if the population growth rate is greater than twice the difference between growth rates of income and transportation costs.
