The 1896 and 1996 US elections: a re-emerging 'problem' of the South and West

Article Abstract:

The regional voting patterns of the 1996 Presidential election bear a striking resemblance to those of the 1896 election, except the party affiliations have been reversed. The South and the mountain and plains states voted Republican in 1996 and Democrat in 1896. The Republican Party faces some of the same difficulties that the Democrats faced in the past as a majority party. Building a coalition among voters holding different social and economic views has become a challenge, and this difficulty must be overcome for the party to regain control of the Presidency.

Early elections in Slovakia: a state of deadlock

Article Abstract:

Slovakia's future as a democracy is reliant on the political activity of Vladimir Meciar, who was elected president. Because of the opposition Meciar faces from parties formed to do nothing but oppose him, it seems his only options for leadership are all undemocratic. One of the things he could do to strengthen democracy is give the judicial branch the powers is it is promised under the constitution. Even t hough the opposition is just that, opposition, it at least provides a political alternative, a hallmark of democracy in any country.

La France pour tous? - the French presidential elections of 23 April and 7 May 1995

Article Abstract:

Gaullism is a movement surpassing divisions between Left and Right in France. A strong populist appeal among the younger generation and Gaullism characterize the presidential campaign of Jacques Chirac, who was elected as the president of France in 1995. Given the evidence that Chirac has allowed prime minister Alain Juppe maximum freedom in forming his administration, a novel departure, it is expected that the former's campaign of a restrained presidency will become a reality.
