The approach of British political parties to a defence role for the European Community

Article Abstract:

Both the Labour and Conservative parties avoided the issue of Britain's involvement in a common EC defense in the 1992 general election. The Conservatives avoided the topic because of divisions within their party on the proper role of the UK in EC defense. Labour embraced EC social provisions but shunned any consideration of security policy. Only the Liberal Democrats wholeheartedly embraced EC involvement. The major parties' reluctance is due to uncertainty about the Europeans' capacity for solidarity and a desire for continued US involvement as provided by NATO.

New Russian political parties and the transition to democracy: the case of Western Siberia

Article Abstract:

The size of the protest vote in the December 1993 elections in Russia suggest that the system of competitive oligarchy created a large gap between the political elite and the masses in Russia, jeopardizing the progress of democracy in the country. The competitive oligarchy proved to be able to create political space for intra-elite negotiation which is considered as the essential requirement for democratic consolidation.

The perils of community as a construct for the political ideology of Welsh nationalism

Article Abstract:

The Welsh National Party, or Plaid Cymru, has yet to develop a clear ideological focus. The party's frequent references to community have not included an operational definition, and the term remains grounded in characteristics rather than the constraints necessary for political application. This lack of coherence must become more precise to ensure the survival of Plaid Cymru.
