Article Abstract:

America's relation to world oil, the development of the international oil industry outside the United States, the place of Organization of Petroleum-Exchange Countries (OPEC) in international oil and US policy towards Middle East oil is considered. Article Abstract:

The incident of the sinking of the nuclear submarine Kursk on 12 August 2000 is reconstructed and the reaction to it by Russian military and political authorities is analyzed. The fact that the way Russia's new elites, both political and military, managed the tragedy did not differ significantly from the manner in which Soviet leaders dealt with such crisis in the late Soviet period, is explained.
