The "other" Pacific rim: Latin America

Article Abstract:

Although exports to Mexico declined in 1996 due to its economic and political instability, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is still expected to improve Mexican-US trade. The NAFTA plan to include Chile is postponed until after the US presidential elections in November, since many in Congress are likely to oppose such trade agreements. Inclusion of Chile in NAFTA will be a positive step toward other US-Latin America trade agreements.
