Reconsidering Evelyn Waugh's 'The Loved One.' (Book)

Article Abstract:

Evelyn Waugh's 'The Loved One' chronicles the life story of an individual but in reality mirrors the tragic times of mid-twentieth century Europe. The protagonist in 'The Loved One' is ahead of her time, and unlike the general impression about Waugh's characterization, displays admirable human qualities. The novel sacrifices entertainment for a critical approach and is visionary in its setting and dialogues. 'The Loved One' lacks intellectual appeal, yet strongly portrays the diverse cultural backgrounds of the main characters and the social milieu they are set in.
