A challenging time

Article Abstract:

Reforming the health care policy of the US pose a challenge to academicians, researchers and policymakers. Republicans in power are calling for very different changes compared to those proposed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. To keep up with these changes, researchers need to understand factors that affect the financing and provision of health care. An alternative to this task is to avail of the services of management consultants, the consequence of which is the deterioration of academic research since all insights will be relegated to consultants.

Reducing risk selection requires more than risk adjustments

Article Abstract:

The government should implement a new health care policy to ensure that private health insurers will offer fair insurance premiums based on accurate risk adjustment criteria. This policy must take into account the people's annual medical expenditure patterns with respect to sex, age and other unobservable factors and should be used as a complement to the insurers' incentive to risk select. Only through this approach can the federal government offer dependable and cost-effective health services to its citizens.

Medicare reform should be more than federal budget reform - and it should be done soon

Article Abstract:

Medicare reform policies reflects concern about Medicare's interaction with the federal budget. Politicians have exploited the issue and used it to their advantage. Two principal risks have come from such rhetorics. One is that Medicare reforms might be implemented on the basis of putting reigns on the federal budgetary allocation for public health care. For such changes, the public may not necessarily be amenable. Medicare costs may boost rapidly especially for the elderly.
